Abstract Grids and Patterns

I started this series of abstract geometric drawings in order to test my new colored pencils for the first time. While most of my previous abstract art has been asymmetrical, the grid provided an ideal structure for liberating light and color as subjects. Working within the geometric constraints established in each drawing helped me constantly derive novelty from repetition, as each composition evolved out of its limits. In this series every line is completely hand-drawn, without straight edges or measurements, and adjusted layer by layer until the shapes stabilize and the colors glow with energy. From drawing to drawing I have developed new curiosities, observing how geometric compositions direct the viewer to repeatedly choose between taking in the surface as a complete whole and parsing through its elemental parts. As the series has grown the drawings have responded to each other in exciting ways, and I look forward to taking these drawings as far as I can.
